With a population of over 23,700 people, the City of Centerville is a quaint suburb of Dayton located in Montgomery County, with a small part located in Greene County. Because of its location between two rivers and because it’s a central location to cities like Lebanon and Dayton, the town’s founder, Benjamin Robbins, originally spelled the community as “Centreville” after his hometown, Centreville, in New Jersey.

By 1900, the U. S. Post Office officially changed the spelling of the town’s name to its current status, “Centerville.”

These days, Centerville is home to the biggest cluster of early stone homes in the State of Ohio. Later, these homes gained a listing on the National Register of Historic Places.

Located close to Main Street and Franklin Street, the oldest of the neighborhoods of downtown Centerville are now known as the Architectural Preservation District. To this day, the area is a reflection back in the time of the “Main Street Downtown” era that shaped American towns and cities during the early 1900s.

Constructed before the First World War, most of the buildings in the APD display a diversity of different architectural styles. Their vivid detail and rich craftsmanship have elevated them into an asset for the Centerville community. 

On Dec. 2, 1968, Centerville earned the status of “city.” Its Town Hall Theatre, which is in the “Heart of Centerville,” has been with the community for more than 70 years.

The “Heart of Centerville” also features a quaint selection of local restaurants, boutiques, and other businesses in a historic atmosphere which also includes Ohio’s largest gathering of early stone buildings.
