Learn More About Waynesville, OH

Waynesville, a village in Warren County, has a rich history dating back to a time prior to Ohio becoming a state. Named in honor of General “Mad” Anthony Wayne, Waynesville is located at the crossing of U.S. Route 42 and State Route 73. The village is known for its unique antique stores and its annual sauerkraut festival. The famous Caesar Creek State Park is roughly five miles east of Waynesville.

Waynesville has an interesting mixture of history and culture as its growth in southwest Ohio, according to the village’s Chamber of Commerce.  A lot of people consider the village the “Antiques Capital of the Midwest” and a sort of microcosm of American heritage because of its founder’s dreams and the village’s accomplishments.

Settled in 1797 by Samuel Heighway, Waynesville was meant to become the capital of the Northwest Territory.  Although that dream never came to fruition, Waynesville eventually became one of the most historically distinguished tourist spots in Southern Ohio. The founder, Heighway, was an engineer from England. He and other English frontiersmen settled Waynesville on March 8, 1797.  His partners, Rev. John Smith, a Methodist minister, Dr. Evan Beans, a physician, and Sir Francis Baily, a young scientist, purchased 30,000 acres in the Symmes Purchase. The land was all between the Little and Great Miami Rivers.  Their initial plan was to establish a plantation. In 1796, a settlement party cleared out the land, which had been surveyed by Heighway as early as 1792.

More than 10 tons of implements and supplies were bought in Baltimore and brought to Philadelphia where the party was assembled.  From there, materials were stowed aboard a 12 by 36-foot flatboat they referred to as the “Kentucky Ark.” It traveled on the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers to the Ohio River.

Once they arrived at what would become the location of Waynesville, the settlers built primitive log shelters prior to log cabins being built facing the river. Heighway’s initial layout was like that of an English village. Various parks and squares were assembled surrounding a central public square. These were set with plans for a serpentine walk, fishpond, and groves of ornamental trees. Heighway’s first map of the village was dotted with fountains. A “Government House” was strategically situated on the public square and was accented by a tree-shaded promenade.
